Create computer-generated 3D objects.

Three-dimensional models, or the mathematical, wireframe representations of three-dimensional objects, are used in a wide variety of fields from movies and video games to medicine, science, architecture and engineering. The process of representing real objects with computer graphics begins with thorough knowledge and skill in 3d modeling. This is the foundation skill set for any 3d animator.

Using Autodesk Maya, this course concentrates on familiarizing students with the 3d modeling process. Through the use of polygons, nurbs and subdivision modeling methods, students learn to approach both technical and organic forms. Forming hierarchies and structures that can be animated is part of the progression, as well as creating character models and putting them in posable form on skeletons. There are hands-on exercises for creating morphing heads, articulatable hands and posable figures, as well as mechanical structures that can be animated.
